PREVIEW: BIG BANDS IN THE PARK Lauderdale House
IT'S not every day you get a phone call from someone in the Netherlands asking, “Can we borrow your park for the afternoon, please?”
But that’s exactly what happened last month, when staff at Lauderdale House were contacted by Rinske Ebers, one of the teachers at a school in the Dutch city of Zwolle.
The school’s Meander Big Band – who play rock, pop, jazz and funk – are currently on a short trip to the UK as guests of Chichester College music department.
With a day trip to London already pencilled in to their itinerary, Ms Ebers decided the band should make the most of the trip and set about looking for somewhere they could play a free afternoon gig.
A friend of Ms Ebers, who lives in Highgate, pointed her in the direction of Lauderdale House, in Waterlow Park, who were happy to “lend them their back garden”.
The free concert is set to take place this Sunday on the Lower Terrace.
Also performing are the Nikki Yeoh Jazz Orchestra, from the Camden Music Service which organises a wide range of music activities for young people who live or attend school in the borough. The Nikki Yeoh Jazz Orchestra is just one of a number of their jazz ensembles.
The players are aged from 12 to 17, and rehearse weekly during term-time at the Camden Saturday Music Centres in La Sainte Union School, in Croftdown Road, and Camden School for Girls, in Sandall Road.
The ensemble plays standards, contemporary jazz and pieces specially composed by Ms Yeoh, and there is an emphasis on developing jazz improvisation skills.
They recently performed at a first anniversary celebration of the Sound Connections Youth Mentors Scheme at The Hospital Club in Covent Garden.
This is a great opportunity for Camden Music students to forge links with students from the Netherlands, and provide free entertainment on a Sunday afternoon for the community.
So why not cobble together a picnic and meander on up to the house for a lazy afternoon of big band jazz? It certainly beats a trip to the Edmonton Ikea... • The Meander Big Band will perform two sets (2.30pm and 5pm) and Camden’s Nikki Yeoh Jazz Orchestra will perform at 4.15pm on Sunday May 11. Free
