PREVIEW HADOUKEN
Electric Ballroom
IF the Camden Crawl is anything to go by, the blossoming music scene around Camden is beginning to bear fruit.
Oddly enough Hadouken!, a band who grew up in Hertfordshire and then formed in Leeds, now seem to represent a microcosm of the scene itself.
Let’s examine the facts. Hadouken! are a musical mish-mash of indie, pop, grime, dub step and electronica.
One thing you’ll struggle to do with Hadouken! is pigeon hole them. In the same way, Camden represents a mish-mash of alternative cultures.
The Hadouken! fan base is dominated by youngsters with fluorescent clothing and, needless to say, if you take a look down Camden High Street that’s what you’ll see in spades.
In addition, you catch the odd grizzled old punk hanging around at Hadouken! gigs just as you do on the High Street.
Hadouken! have taken deliberate steps to draw a specific audience. The under-age gig at Camden Barfly last month was a riotous affair and their upcoming gig at the Electric Ballroom on May 21 aims to breathe new life into a venue which used to see buzz bands play every day not every fortnight.
The band’s innovative decision to sign and then customise fan’s T-shirts on Camden High Street before the Crawl shows that innovation is their forte.
If a band truly represents the Camden spirit and scene it surely must be Hadouken! Their debut album, Music for an Accelerated Culture, is out now and judging by their rising reputation you’d best get yourself down to the Electric Ballroom to see what all the fuss is about. Chris Reynolds • Hadouken! play the Electric Ballroom, Camden High Street, on Wednesday May 21.
