The Review - PICK OF THE INDIES
Published: 26 June 2008

Lou Reed
Pick of the Indies

VELVET Underground legend Lou Reed is the guest of honour this Sunday at the Curzon cinema in Mayfair.
He is appearing at a special sneak preview of a new film chronicling a performance of his
seminal 1973 album Berlin.
Made by renowned rock’n’roll director Julian Schnabel, it was filmed over five nights in the singer-songwriter’s hometown of Brooklyn in 2006. It demonstrates the artist at the peak of his career and afterwards you will have the chance to quiz the great man himself.
It is a rare chance to see a true music legend live and hear him talk about his work. The only downside is that you will be humming the refrain from Take A Walk On The Wild Side for the foreseeable. Tickets cost £15 – well worth it.
Lou Reed’s Berlin is at the Curzon Mayfair cinema on Sunday June 29 at 6:20pm. Tel: 0871 703 3989.
If you like your cinema home-grown, on Sunday you can check out a day of screenings featuring the work of the director David Lean.
He was born in 1908 and to mark his centenary, Screen on the Hill in Belsize Park are showing some cracking Lean double bills.
On Sunday you can catch In Which We Serve and Blithe Spirit from 1pm onwards.
In Which We Serve was Lean’s first feature film and it tells of life on an ocean-bound destroyer during the Second World War. It is a microcosm of the social tensions that had ripped Britain apart in the 1930s. It is very loosely based on the life of Louis Mountbatten, and it stars Noel Coward.
Coward also features with Rex Harrison in Blithe Spirit a cheerful comedy about a novelist whose marriage is uncomfortably interrupted by the ghost of his first wife. It won an Oscar and even the special effects don’t feel dated.
In Which We Serve and Blythe Spirit, Screen on the Hill, Haverstock Hill, Sunday from 1pm. Tel: 0207 435 3366.
