Adele is set to play at the Somerset House event
Officially Somer’ with our hottest mini-festival
PREVIEW: SUMMER SERIES Somerset House
WHO would have thought that from one of London’s most civilised settings could emerge one its best-loved mini-festivals? Yes, you get to eat ice-cream and singalong in the rain, but, best yet, you can still go home when the last backing singer has left the stage.
The Somerset House annual Summer Series has always been a triumph, and this year is no different, with Adele – “tipped for greatness, everybody’s saying it” – doing her only UK show this summer.
The hearty songstress is possibly the only new bird on the block I can stomach at the moment.
Duffy, also in the line-up, while hugely talented, needs to break free of whatever it is keeping her boxed into some saccharine A&R man’s pop vision.
What the hell is Warwick Avenue about anyway?
Lupe Fiasco, on the other hand, offers something different. At a time when hip-hoppers are breaking away from the 50 Cent sleaze model, Lupe partying at Somerset House is a perfect symbol of that. Muslim rapper Lupe’s Superstar hit – picking apart the celebrity nonsense – proves he is just that.
But it is mostly a rock and indie fest.
The Fratellis, The Zutons, We Are Scientists, and French electro princes Justice appear.
* The Somerset House Summer Series takes place from July 10-19.
