Grooves
ONE of my favourite hangouts in Camden Town has to be the Constitution.
But a beautiful, prize-winning pub garden that even Charlie Dimmock loves (don’t ask) is not its main draw.
Instead, something giving Lost Vagueness a run for its money on Saturday, a new night at the Royal College Street pub – which overlooks the canal – is launched this weekend.
Featuring and hosted by one of the most exciting bands Grooves has heard for a while, Attack/Switch/Attack, expect them to play one of their punky rocky perfect pop songs, Queen of Inverness Street.
And they’re obviously eager to show Camden Town a thing or two about real music. While the pub’s landlady, Wendy Clare, is as sincere as it gets about loving music of all kinds, it looks like she’s booked a cracker in Attack/ Switch/Attack.
The ethos behind the night, called COSH, is, according to A/S/A’s Simon, to “book the bands we like, DJ, and generally adopt a glorious DIY ethic to the whole event”.
Going further, he attacks – how appropriate – other venues in the area for selling out. “As a reaction to the current expensive and slightly soullessness of some Camden venues we are trying to create an underground hideaway from the tourist hordes,” he says. And it’s all for the bargain price of £1.99!
Meanwhile, another night that is the epitome of NOT selling out – Lost Vagueness holds court this weekend. Originally scheduled to perform at Proud, The Monarch and The Enterprise, the latter has pulled out and a members bar has stepped in.
