REVIEW: MARK MORRISS Hoxton Square and Kitchen
THERE are some who say Mark Morriss of the Bluetones hasn’t done much since writing Expecting To Fly – one of THE Britpop albums of the 1990s. While the Bluetones have struggled to achieve the commercial success of their debut album, they have trundled along quite happily and it’s a mark of their enduring success that their fans remain loyal.
And that is probably why so many turned up to see Mr Morriss do his solo thing in an achingly cool Hoxton bar.
On first hearing, the two singles from Memory Muscle, I’m Sick and Lay Low, sound as good as anything he’s written in the past, while Digging A Hole, a guitar-driven, seven-minute epic, was mesmerising.
The trademark Morriss lyrics and the Bluetones sound were both in evidence, but everyone was secretly pleased he didn’t mine his back catalogue for a crowd-pleaser.
Liberated from Bluetonic and Slight Return, Morriss is happy as a bluebird in spring. Charlotte Chambers
