The Review - AT THE MOVIES with DAN CARRIER

THIS year’s London International Animation Festival kicks off tomorrow at the Curzon Soho and is packed full of the most cutting edge in film art.
Featuring more than 220 films from more than 2,000 entries screened in seven days, the organisers have found works from 28 countries, giving a comprehensive guide to what is happening in this quirky world of animated cinema.
Judged by Hampstead-based animation expert Clare Kitson, the opening night offers a taste of what looks like a cracking seven-day festival.
Manga staple Paprika starts the festivities followed by the 1973 classic Fantastic Planet, shown at the Curzon Soho in Shaftesbury Avenue. It includes the chance for a cartoon-orientated boogie in the bar where the cinema is holding a festival launch party.
Kitson’s own credits include her well-received book on the beautiful art of Russian animator Yuri Norstein and a new work, soon to be published, on British animation. She was responsible for Channel 4’s animation work for 10 years and is highly regarded for her promotion of visual art in cinema.
The festival is also showing at the Bloomsbury Renoir and offers the a unique chance to see what’s cooking in the world of cartoons.
Meanwhile, The Prince Charles cinema off Leicester Square continues its brilliant Monday night double-bill programme with two of POTI’s favourite American trash-o-ramas: the super Nicholas Cage flick Raising Arizona and Johnny Depp’s Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas. Depp’s portrayal of Gonzo journalist Hunter S Thompson’s adventures in Glitter Gulch is a brilliant adaptation. Time to pour yourself a very large Chivas Regale before kicking back and watching the fireworks.
