Turin Brakes on stage at Proud Gallery
Unsigned stars on a break from the labels
REVIEW: TURIN BRAKES
Proud Gallery
“IT’S funny that this is a night for unsigned bands,” quipped Turin Brakes frontman Olly Knights, “because technically we’re unsigned.”
Thus Knights made light of the band’s split from EMI at the Proud Gallery last week, where unsigned acts Killing Cupid and No Mind were battling it out for a record deal with a top indie label.
Once the amateur spirits were calmed, the veterans took to the Intel Studio stage to give the fresh young faces a glimpse of the future.
Turin Brakes have been together long enough that they hardly need to communicate with each other to produce a polished and accomplished show.
The band’s maturity shone through, and each time a song verged on forgettable, they followed it with something special.
Highlights included Dark on Fire – powerful, if a little like the poor relation to Radiohead’s Street Spirit – and a cover of Chris Isaac’s Wicked Game, their cowboy strings and Olly’s soaring vocals perfectly suited to the country lament.
They ended on Emergency 72, leaving devoted fans humming the tune as they made their way home.
