Elbow
Elbow your way to the front of the line
PREVIEW:ELBOW Roundhouse
AFTER making a splash in the new millennium as the “corpse in your bathtub”, Elbow fans will be hoping the 2008 Mercury Prize winners aren’t submerged in their own success. From tales of romantic implosion and alcopop-fuelled small-town warfare, the mournful merchants of the macabre have moved on.
Elbow’s career has stumbled a little along the way, but they’ve always promised the sort of form that has rightfully earned a whopping three nights at Camden Town’s stage for unit-shifting superpowers.
Guy Garvey’s gang from the North-west now have a saccharine singalong repertoire perfect for big venues.
The achingly humble frontman with the Peter Gabriel vocals has a talent for keeping an audience on side.
And with the orchestral euphoria of One Day Like This, the track that probably clinched their recent award for The Seldom Seen Kid, the Roundhouse could witness some real melancholic magic this weekend. ALLAN LEDWARD
* Elbow play the Roundhouse on October 11, 12 and 13.
