Grooves
AFTER much begging and cajoling – and one stalkerish email – the column has returned.
It’s been a busy few weeks, which included the BT Music Awards where the Camden Crawl won best digital campaign, whatever that means. It was a night of free-flowing champagne, with lost-looking indie boy Sam Beeton winning the hearts of every female in the room and twice UK beatbox champ Beardyman provoking the only standing ovation of the night with his crazed combination of dance, drum’n’bass, Nina Simone and Freddy Mercury, all the product of an elastic voicebox. Then on to follow the fashionistas at the launch of Proud Camden’s edgiest monthly night GangBang on Thursday (one to look out for), followed by a weekend of heavy partying.
The Electric Proms are looming and Mencap’s Little Noise Sessions are returning to the Union Chapel next month, so time to stock up on pro-plus, and clear the diary.
Latest Proms
cancellations: Chaka Khan, Ny, Bashy, and Chase and Status. Latest Proms additions: pre-clubbing screening of French Dj duo Justice’s A Cross the Universe documentary at Koko, Pete and the Pirates, General Fiasco, Pull in Emergency and Chew Lips at Proud, Cornershop, Lowkey and Bobby Friction at Barfly.
* AND now a call to all hardworking musicians, whether you’re a hip-hop king, a punk princess or a pop prince, send me your records. I’m throwing down the gauntlet and reviving Grooves’ hotly contested Record of the Week. So whether you’re signed to a big label or an unsigned act practising in your neighbour’s garage, send in your tunes and Grooves will review the pick of the week. Send to: Record of the Week, Grooves, Camden New Journal, 40 Camden Road, NW1 9DR.
