Christmas from Byrd to Britten
PREVIEW: ROYAL FREE MUSIC SOCIETY St Mark's Church
THE Royal Free Music Society and Hampstead Sinfonietta will once again perform at their spiritual home in St Mark’s Church, Primrose Hill, on Saturday December 13.
In keeping with the festive mood creeping across the borough, the society will present a selection of Advent music and traditional carols from Byrd to Britten, as well as Bach’s Brandenberg concerto No3 and Corelli’s Christmas Concerto.
Musical director Dr Andrew Rochford tells me the society are particularly looking forward to performing an arrangement of Away in a Manger by Professor Stephen Gillespie, a consultant microbiologist at the Royal Free Hospital and recent graduate in musical composition from Birkbeck College.
And although talk of summer 2009 might be as cruel as telling an eight-year-old to wait just a little longer for Christmas, here’s one for your diary. The Society hopes to perform a world premiere of Professor Gillespie’s Gloria in June 2009 in a special 10th Anniversary concert.
