THIS IS a plea to real music lovers to support your independent labels. Go out and buy the music, pay for CDs, give them as Christmas presents and help the indies survive.
Every day we hear about the economy and now it’s hurting the music industry. I don’t want to see up-and-coming bands strangled before they get off the ground. Luckily they have websites such as MySpace and Youtube to get their music heard but they often need support from managers, PRs, labels and distributors.
Last week Pinnacle Entertainment went into administration. It won’t mean much to most people, but if the company can’t pay the labels for the albums they distribute, not all labels will survive. And without them we’ll have fewer original bands and singers and more generic pop.
n On the subject of pop, I spent two hours in a freezing paparazzi pen outside Koko on Monday just to get a picture of X-Factor finalist Alexandra Burke for the paper. I know these things are stage-managed, but I had no idea to what degree until I saw corporate minions dishing out handmade banners to the screeching crowd. I always thought the devoted fans used their own marker pens and glitter.
n My favourite, The Reverend and The Makers, DJ at Proud on Friday night. Wonder if the Rev will end his show by busking outside Morrisons like he did last year?
n The latest rash of Christmas novelty records has begun and Camden Town’s Grant Davis, who lives on the site of Bob Cratchit’s house, has launched Bah Humbug (Merry, Merry Christmas) at the Earl of Camden, Parkway.
