TWILIGHT– Vampires seem to have been all the rage for about eternity. Every generation rediscovers the vampire flick. For mine it was The Lost Boys, and more recently it’s been Buffy.
The idea of being nearly a human, but not quite, being a member of a special clique with a secret seems to appeal to teenagers.
I can’t think why. Twilight runs very much like a high school romance. When Bella moves to a new school, she is intrigued by the Cullen siblings, who are her classmates.
She sits next to Edward Cullen in a biology class and he warns her about becoming his friend.
He is a vampire, y’see, but a good kind – he only drinks animal blood.
They fall in love but danger lies ahead for the pair...
The Bicycle Thieves – Made in 1948 this Italian film directed by Vittoria De Sica tells the story of unemployed Antonio Ricci, whose bike has been pinched.
He needs it if he is to keep the job he has managed to get pasting up movie posters. So he traipses through the streets of recently war-ravaged Rome looking for his ride.
With wonderful moments and an underlying discussion of the cyclical nature of crime and poverty, the film was awarded an Oscar in 1949.
