It’s a Biouxtiful Butterfly
IF YOU’VE spent any time in Camden, you’ll recognise Bioux. He’s the tall, shaggy, red-haired Brummie selling dead bands’ records in the market, DJing Northern Soul to the Skins generation at Proud and dodging the paps when out with old friend Amy Winehouse.
Bioux grew up a mod alongside future members of Ocean Colour Scene and he and his friends once took Paul Weller to see Nick Drake’s grave.
He is bringing Boom Boom to Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes -– a weekly platform for world-class burlesque dancer Vicky Butterfly.
Ms Butterfly has performed all over the world, been projected on to Paul Weller and Kings of Leon concert backdrops and appeared in videos for The Verve and The Fratellis.
With Bioux DJing, she will take over the Kingpin Suite for a decadent night of music, dance, art, half-price bowling and a 14-seat jacuzzi.
Bioux said: “A lot of it is a stage for Vicky. I’ve known her for years, from when she was beginning her burlesque career. She’s a sight to behold. She’s performed everywhere from Paris to Vegas. It will be burlesque, cabaret and performance art. The music will be rock and roll, swing, rockabilly, Sixties, garage, exotica beats, freakbeat and Northern Soul. It’s going to be pretty much all played on 45s.”
Bioux’s Camden Town home is often populated with burlesque dancers – just part of “the scene” he mixes in. But despite these arty/media circles, he claims to keep himself unaffected by the madness.
He said: “If you know some people that are famous it’s a little embarrassing being photographed next to them. It’s best to try and stay on your own merits.”
Bioux came to Camden nine years ago and soon inherited a friend’s record stall in the market. But music was in his bones from an early age.
He said: “I started going to Northern Soul clubs when I was 13. My brothers were punks and my dad always called me ‘Boo’ so they started spelling it like Siouxie Sioux.”
He flitted between bands before becoming friends with future members of Ocean Colour Scene, who grew up nearby. Bioux said: “Their album Moseley Shoals was named after us lot in Moseley village. The idea was different shoals of fish – our different groups of friends.”
OCS’s Steve Craddock then began playing in Paul Weller’s band. Bioux added: “We tagged on tour around Europe. We all met up with Paul Weller with a gang of scooters and took him to Nick Drake’s grave because he was such a big fan.”
* Boom Boom is 9pm-3am every Friday at The Kingpin Suite at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes, Bedford Way, WC1.
