JENNIFER Saunders and Dawn French pop up in this hugely original animated feature. Coraline is a rather dark fantasy tale about a little girl who finds an alternate world next door to the new flat she has moved into: inside, she discovers a second set of parents who are almost identical to her own (except for the rather telling facial feature of having buttons for eyes.)
When her real parents disappear, she has to track them down with the help and hindrance of a cast of wonderful characters. They include her sidekick, a rather loveable fat black cat, and two actresses, Mrs Miriam Forcible and Mrs April Spink, super thespians who also guide Coraline as she seeks to save her parents.
The story is based on the award-winning novel by Neil Gaiman and it pushes the right buttons when required. Corlaine is utterly terrific to look at, with a puppet theatre sensibility. If your nippers have been particularly good, find it screened in 3-D – it makes for a marvellous experience.
