WHEN my flaky friends (you know who you are) abandoned our Saturday night plans, I found myself struggling to watch the Eurovision Song Contest on my dodgy laptop. The new voting system has allowed an element of music to overcome politics and, in my opinion, the right act won. But seriously, don’t we want a return to the tacky glittery spandex days and national rivalry? Don’t get me wrong, there was still a little of that on Saturday – Germany’s Dita von Teese doing what she does best, while flirting with a man in dazzling silver leggings – but I want more of this nonsense, not less. Well I can say that, if I had my way, I’d have been well away from the TV on Saturday night. And where was Ireland?

• More cuts news: after venturing into two cities last year (London and Liverpool), BBC Electric Proms will only play Camden in October and will go down from five to four nights.
Each night will be run by a different BBC radio channel so expect some themed nights.

• IF you’re at a loose end over the Bank Holiday, head down to Proud where Pete and the Pirates are headlining on Sunday (May 24), while the incredible Japanese drummer and percussionist Joji Hirota will be displaying his talents for free on Bank Holiday Monday from 4pm.

• ALTERNATIVELY, check out the Big Chill House where our very own Suggs is joining Reggae Roast for a Bank Holiday BBQ.
DJs Exel & Moodie will be providing 14 hours of the toughest roots reggae, Madness frontman Suggs will be spinning tracks from his classic ska and 2 Tone collection, and producer Dub Terror will be smashing boundaries. Better still, it’s all free.
