Josie in the stars
PREVIEW: LOST IN THE STARS Queen Elizabeth Hall
A rare opportunity to hear Josie Benson, the Camden Town mezzo-soprano, will be presented next week when the BBC Concert Orchestra gives two performances of Kurt Weill’s musical tragedy Lost in the Stars at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
The musical, with words by Maxwell Anderson, is based on Alan Paton’s novel Cry, the Beloved Country.
Ms Benson plays Linda, a night-club singer in Johannesburg’s shanty-town, and her solo Who’ll Buy? is a Kurt Weill classic. “It’s a wonderful role, well-suited to my voice,” she says.
Ms Benson is studying for a degree in applied social sciences in the development of community and youth work at Goldsmiths University. She took up acting and music after leaving Parliament Hill School 18 years ago.
She has enjoyed a varied career, in demand particularly for her singing expertise in the roles of both Carmen and Carmen Jones.
