Highgate’s choral team go Gospel in church
PREVIEW: HIGHGATE CHORAL SOCIETY All Hallows’ church
HAMPSTEAD mezzo-soprano Catherine Hopper (pictured) will be one of the soloists in the Highgate Choral Society’s rendering of Verdi’s Requiem at All Hallows’ Church, Gospel Oak, on Saturday July 11. She will be singing with the choral support of her mother, Cecily Hopper, who is a long-standing member of the choir.
Catherine is one of the many musicians to have sprung from Frances Holland School, Clarence Gate, going on to study at Leeds University, in Germany and at the Royal Academy.
Now, aged only 24, she is well into her professional singing career with numerous recitals and concert performances under her belt. Opera roles to date include Lucretia in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia; Ramiro in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera and mezza-actress in Judith Weir’s Night at the Chinese Opera.
Other soloists will be Katherine Broderick, soprano; Andrew Stapes, tenor; and Graeme Broadbent, baritone. Conductor Ronald Corp will give a free pre-performance talk at 6.50pm. “Verdi’s Requiem has all the best ingredients of his greatest operas plus the religious intensity of an act of worship – a very potent combination which makes the work a supreme choral masterpiece,” says Mr Corp.
