Grooves
I REALLY wanted to give Neil Young a chance. Up to now the only impact he had on me was when I watched one of his old concerts on TV in France.
There were Stars Wars-type Jawas wandering about onstage and I wondered if he could be credited with inventing them. So I watched him at Hyde Park this weekend but, at risk of sounding like a heathen, he just wasn’t for me. On the other hand, I’ll never forget that afternoon with Seasick Steve.
* I’m heading back to Hyde Park for Wireless this weekend for Kanye West, The Streets, Dizzee Rascal, Basement Jaxx and too many others. There’s also speed dating, pampering, a sandy beach, an early bird treasure hunt and model search, so dress well.
* The Garage in Highbury reopened with a bang last weekend. Bloc Party and Peter Bjorn and John played and there’s a long list of great acts to come.
* Levi’s Ones to Watch five-night revue begins on July 7. Danananan-
aykroyd, Hockey, Everything Everything, Passion Pit and Chew Lips are on the line-up at Vibe Bar in Brick Lane. Friendly Fires will play a special show on the final night in a secret location.
* Roxanne de Bastion plays the Barfly on Saturday. Roxanne, who grew up in Berlin but moved to the UK two years ago is the only solo artist to be supported by a full band at the venue.
* I know it’s old news now but I’ve just got to note the loss of Michael Jackson. I can track all sorts of memories growing up listening to his songs. I always hoped he wasn’t guilty and I’m sorry he’s gone. Enough said.
