35 Shots of Rum Directed by Claire Denis. Certificate: 12a
THIS well-paced tale is set in Paris, and looks at a father-daughter relationship. Widower Lionel (Alex Descas) is a train driver who has raised his daughter Josephine (Mati Diop) since she was a little girl. They are obviously close, but as she grows up, the nature of their relationship inevitably changes and they both have to come to terms with their new roles.
35 Shots of Rum is about friendship over time and will fill you with a suitably satisfying glow at its conclusion.
The Private lives of Pippa Lee Directed by Rebecca Miller. Certificate: 15
ROBIN Wright Penn plays Pippa Lee, the wife of a man who falls in love with a younger woman, and we subsequently watch her gently fall to bits. She has recently moved with her older husband (Alan Arkin) to a home where they plan to spend his retirement. But there is trouble ahead – endless rounds of perfect yet boring dinner parties are taking their toll, and Pippa starts sleepwalking and having visions of a youth she had long forgotten. This film, based on the book by Rebecca Miller, shows the travails of a mid-life crisis and how overcoming such troubles creates a person who is much stronger by the end of it.
Cloud Nine Directed by Andreas Dresen. Certificate: 15
THIS is a story of a young love affair in old age. We meet faithful wife Inge who finds herself inexplicably drawn to Karl – despite a successful 30-year marriage, and grandchildren to dote on. Inge can’t let her new love go, and has to confront the feelings and the consequences. Director Andreas Dresen has created a brave but sad story of infidelity, passion and guilt.
