IT is the country’s oldest surviving cinema and now the future of the Phoenix in East Finchley looks rosier than ever as a massive grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has been secured. The grant of £600,000 will go towards restoring the Art Deco facade, and repairing work inside the auditorium.
A bar – which was once in place but lost in the 1970s – will be reinstated.
Patron Michael Palin said: “This is terrific news. “As the years go by and the old cinemas fall by the wayside, the Phoenix has indeed lived up to its name. “Now there’s an exciting future ahead for one of the capital’s oldest working cinemas.”
Meanwhile, I’ll be heading to the Prince Charles cinema in Soho tomorrow (Friday) for a sci-fi double bill to see Donald Sutherland’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Alien – the director’s cut.
I’ll forever be haunted by Sutherland’s face when he sees the dog with a human head in this 1970s classic, and Alien needs no introduction – well worth a watch on the big screen.
With the Prince Charles doing tickets at £5 for one or £9 for both the movies, and letting you take beers in from the bar as well, this is the only place for film buffs to be on a Friday night.
