The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB
Published: 16 July 2009

BENICASSIM! The only word on any self-respecting festival-goer’s mind this weekend. But if you’re like me, unable to get away and daydreaming of your next great escape, check out our festival guide. There’s so many to cover that we’ll be bringing you more next week.

* Speaking of festivals, can anything ever measure up to Woodstock? It may have happened before I was born but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have relished seeing Hendrix, The Who and Janis Joplin do their thing.

* I did see Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian, who played an unscheduled acoustic set at Woodstock a couple of years ago – older, greyer but still capable of whipping up some magic as he conjured up the mellow Rain on the Roof.
But it’s good to know Barry the Fish Melton (ex-Country Joe and the Fish) is still around. He plays Cross Kings tonight (Thursday) at a benefit gig for UCAPV, a new campaign against G20 police actions. See www.thecrosskings.co.uk

* If you like your music with fewer flowers in your hair, head down to Kentish Town’s HMV Forum for the Kerrang! Awards Week of Rock. From July 28 to August 1, the line-up includes Limp Bizkit, Youmeatsix, Dragonforce, Buckcherry and Lacuna Coil. I’m still waiting for Linkin Park to descend on Kentish Town.

*For a more low-key evening, The Stag in Fleet Road launches a free acoustic night on Sunday. First on the list to play are New York Fund, Richie Ragany and The Sea. The pub promises new, emerging and breaking artists. And there’s a BBQ bucket, loads of Pimm’s and lemonade too. Info from alex@TheStagHampstead.com
