Minni Weist, has turned her King’s Cross arch into a studio
Underneath the arches, dreams of new artistic talent

ARTIST Minne Weisz has turned her St Pancras brick arch studio into a gallery, with the aim of championing new artists.
But as well as a showcase for the endeavours of contemporary artists, she believes her studio itself is a work of art and hopes visitors will be as interested in spaces hosting exhibitions as the pieces on the walls themselves.
The arches themselves have provided her with inspiration for her. She recalled travelling to Berlin as a student just two years after the Wall fell and from there was amazed to discover a burgeoning art scene in the city’s derelict areas. It is this that seems to have drawn her to King’s Cross.
“We are in the last remaining Victorian arches in King’s Cross,” she says with pride. “It has become a bit of landmark. Before the redevelopment of St Pancras and the other works, this place was a labyrinth of workshops and small businesses. These are all that remain.
“I want to generate a community spirit, and there is currently no art space here except for us. I want this to be a place for people to come with their ideas and we’ll help make them work.”
The first shows include a night-time installation called Labrynthe. The idea is to screen silent films in the windows of the gallery, giving something, as she puts it, for “night walkers and stray dogs” to view in the early hours. “It will also act as a way of opening up the street at night, when its gloomy and a bit scary in King’s Cross,” she says.
Minnie knows the King’s Cross area well: she had been employed by the King’s Cross railway lands developers Argent to chronicle through her art the area and how it is changing.
Weisz, who grew up in Hampstead and is the sister of Hollywood actor Rachel, says the draw of King’s Cross’s industrial past was strong. “The buildings in King’s Cross have a real sense of history and of place. I have always been interested in opening up these spaces that were just sitting there.
“This was originally part of my studio. I thought it would be a great idea to use the space to support emerging artists who have been in the same position as myself, looking for somewhere special to do their work justice.”
