‘Father’ organ’s heavenly sound
PREVIEW: ORGAN RECITAL St dominic’s Priory
ORGANISTS from all over the world will be assembling tomorrow (Friday) at St Dominic’s Priory, near Queen’s Crescent, to hear new organ music played on its magnificent 1883 “Father” Willis organ. The evening recital by Russian organist Ilya Kudryavtsev will mark the opening of the three-day Annual Festival of New Organ Music, better known as AFNOM. New organ music written by more than 30 composers will be played during the festival at St Dominic’s, Marylebone Parish Church, Westminster Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.
Organists will include St Dominic’s director of music Martin Stacey, and the renowned Highgate organist Jennifer Bate. “The idea of the festival is to bring together composers, performers and audiences to hear and enjoy the best in new music for the organ,” says Martin Stacey, AFNOM’s founding director. “We do this by providing a series of ‘exhibition concerts’, with each event featuring music by living composers played by the composers themselves or by selected organists. Of course, it’s vital to play the new music on some of the best organs in London. “The St Dominic’s Priory organ is not only one of the best in London, I’d say it’s one of the best anywhere in the country. It has not been altered since ‘Father’ Harry Willis finished building it in 1883. It has a very integrated sound, every stop being as intended by ‘Father’ Willis. It sounds absolutely magnificent in the huge cavernous church of St Dominic’s.”
