The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. Directed by Tony Scott. Certificate: 15
Starring Denzel Washington as a cop and John Travolta as a ruthless baddie, you can already imagine the high levels of testosterone flying about this action drama about a ruthless gang who hijack a New York subway train and the ensuing attempts by NY’s finest to rescue commuters and apprehend those responsible.
Mad Sad and Bad Directed by Avie Luthra. Certificate: 15 It’s not often you get to type the words “filmed entirely on location in Luton”, but for this British comedy, that is the case. The jewel of Bedfordshire is the backdrop for this consideration of the life and times of siblings Hardeep, Rashmi and Atul. The trio are members of a rather dysfunctional family and we watch them quibble as only family members can do throughout this exploration of what it means to be in your mid-30s, in mixed-race relationships and have friends who spend much of their lives wringing hands about the inadequacies of themselves. Starring Meera Syal of Goodness Gracious Me fame, it has a fair few laughs, a fast script and is gentle – but extremely predictable.
G-Force. Directed by Jerry Bruckheimer. Certificate: U OK, so how can you not want to see a film in 3-D about a team of superhero, crime-fighting guinea pigs?
This film aimed at kick-starting the summer holiday season is by Hollywood Jerry Bruckheimer (Beverley Hills Cop, Pirates of the Caribbean) and has his polished production skills all over it. It features Kentish Town-based actor Bill Nighy as the terror mastermind intent on taking over the world: but without bargaining for a bunch of furry rodents getting in the way.
