Grooves
IS it possible to feel sentimental for a time you never had?
I used to watch the Woodstock movie and wish I was in the middle of a Joni Mitchell song, heading on down to Yasgur’s Farm. Anything for a glimpse of Hendrix and his guitar. But then I saw Saturday Night Fever and a whole bunch of Pacino gangster flicks set in disco nightclubs and it all looked so glittery and glam. These days you can wear anything you like and find any kind of music you want, so why am I looking back?
• Chic and Nile Rodgers, the disco authors of Le Freak and Everybody Dance, play HMV Forum on September 4. Tickets £29.50 but it’s a small price to pay for some serious nostalgia.
• Proud’s offering an alternative trip down memory lane exhibition – Woodstock Vision: The Spirit of a Generation. Shot by Elliott Landy, the show runs until October 4. There’s also some rare Kings of Leon photographs taken by NME photographer Jo McCaughey in Kings of Leon: 10-Year Reign, which runs at Proud Camden from October 22 to December 6.
• Natalie Imbruglia’s so popular that her Lexington show next Wednesday has been sold out for weeks. Our reviewer will be right in the middle of the action.
• Aussie rockers Jet returned on Monday to the Hard Rock Cafe to preview their third album, Shaka Rock. Sadly, frontman Nic Cester passed out during only the second song of their set. Hopefully he will have recovered by September 19 when they are scheduled to play the HMV Forum.
• Sad news that Tunng’s Big Wheel Sundays show at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has been cancelled. Alabama 3 and British Sea Power are still on.
