IT’S a bit of coup: The Tricycle, that lovely cinema on the Kilburn High Road, have a sneaky screening of Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes’s latest offering on Monday night.
And get this: Sam has jetted in from the sunnier climes of Hollywood to answer your questions at the event.
The film is called Away With Me and tells the story of Burt and Verona. They are a mid-30-something couple who have been together for sometime and are due to have a baby. They are not married – Burt is keen but Verona thinks weddings are dumb.
The pair have to balance their conflicting wunderlust, a yearning for the no-ties days of youth, and a feeling that they should be settling down, making a family and finding somewhere to call home.
Starring John Krasinki and Maya Rudolph, we discover that family complications intrude on domestic idyll, with issues concerning the whereabouts of grandparents and the roles they will play in the upbringing on the little one.
Gramps decides to upsticks and move to Europe a month before the arrival, prompting the couple to go on an American roadtrip to find friends they could settle near and a community to call their own.
Mendes will always be known for the incredible American Beauty, and rumours have it that this tale is on a par. American reviewers, where it has already been in the cinemas, say its a “Juno for 30-somethings”, and has a super soundtrack. Co-written by David Eggers, expect a witty script and an insightful consideration of the human condition, circa the summer of 2009.
