The Review - AT THE MOVIES with DAN CARRIER

Pick of the Indies

THERE is lots of Indie news this week: first, a massive hats off to Nick Hillel, film-maker, artist and all-round top talent.
He is behind a project to make a film based around a year in the life of Hampstead Heath, and got the go-ahead from the City of London this week. His inspiration has partly been Gideon Koppel’s Sleep Furiously, the marvellous film about a Welsh mountain village. I caught up with Heath chairman Michael Wellbank, who says he was utterly taken aback by Nick’s dedication and understanding of the Heath. Mr Wellbank told me: “It will be a wonderful record of the Heath, both its natural state and what it means to the people who use it.”

HE was a socialist firebrand, a member of the Unity theatre, and a New Journal distributor to boot. Now the life of Jack Firestein has been made into a film and is being screened for the first time in its complete form.

The London Socialist Film Co-Op will be screening Jack Firestein: More Than Just A Book Seller at the Renoir Cinema, in the Brunswick Centre, on Sunday.
It charts his life and will be of interest to those who knew him – but also offers a dramatic take on some key political events of the past century.
Meanwhile, I know how much we all love a free film – if you fancy watching Steven Soderbergh’s bio-pic of Che Guevara, Cuban campaigners Rock Around The Blockade are hosting a free screening of the first part of the flick tonight (Thursday) to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the revolutionary leader’s death.
The film, starring Benicio Del Toro, traces how Che and Fidel Castro launched an invasion of the island from Mexico on a tiny, leaking fishing boat.
The film starts at 7.30pm at Bolivar Hall, 54 Grafton Way, W1.
