All-Hallow the HSC
PREVIEW: HIGHGATE CHORAL SOCIETY
All Hallows Church
SINGING abilities of members of the Highgate Choral Society will be put to the test at its autumn concert next Saturday, November 14, at All Hallows’ Church, Gospel Oak. A challenging programme juxtaposes Janacek’s flamboyant Glagolitic Mass with the Mozart Requiem. For most amateur choirs, to sing one or the other well would be challenging enough, particularly after a limited number of rehearsals.
But the HCS regards itself as a being a cut above most amateur choirs and will be seeking to confirm its reputation as north London’s premier amateur choir by rising to the challenging music.
Singing as a soloist with the choir again will Olivia Ray, the noted Holloway mezzo whose family lived for many years on Branch Hill, Hampstead. “I’ve just sung in the Mozart Requiem again, in Ely Cathedral, but the Janacek will be new for me,” she says.
