The Place has been based at its distinctive, Grade II-listed home on Duke's Road since 1969. As a Victorian drill hall, it was built in 1887 as a home for the Artists Rifle Volunteer regiment, but fell into disuse. It was in urgent need of repair when it was bought and converted into a theatre, cafe and dance studios by The Place's founder, Robin Howard.
Today The Place is key centre for dance. The Robin Howard Dance Theatre, Britain's busiest dance venue is housed here and world-famous dance training conservatoire, London Contemporary Dance School . The Place is also home to the Richard Alston Dance Company, one of the UK 's most successful dance companies, and other resident artists. It runs classes in the evenings and weekends for dancers of all ages and ability levels. The Place has been extended and expanded over the years, most recently with the addition of a brand new, state-of-the-art block of six studios on Flaxman Terrace, designed by award-winning architects Allies and Morrison, which was completed in 2001.
