The name of St Martin ’s Theatre is inextricably linked with The Mousetrap, the world’s longest running play, that has monopolised the theatre since 1974. The Agatha Christie ‘whodunnit’ thriller had previously been at The Ambassadors, twin of the St Martin’s (and also designed by W. G. R. Sprague) since 1952. A notice in the foyer of the St Martins announces to patrons the exact performance number that has been reached that night.

A murder mystery feels the right production for the St Martin ’s; with 550 seats on three levels it has an intimate atmosphere. Its décor is restrained, an exception compared to most other glitzy West End theatres, and a contrast to the fancy Ambassadors. When it opened in 1916, it was described as: “a very cosy and discreet little place, all soft-coloured wood panelling and peacock-blue hangings, with no touch of gilding except on the lamp brackets”. It remains exactly the same today.
