The UCL Bloomsbury is sited just off the Euston Road , not in the thick of London ’s theatre community, but in close proximity to University College London who own and part-fund the theatre. Built in 1968 on the site of a bomb-damaged church, it opened as the Collegiate, until it was renamed to reflect its location and university connection. Compared to the glitz and splendour of many West End theatres, its plate glass and plain dark exterior are somewhat dull, but it houses a bright and comfortable 550-seat auditorium.
Capitalising on the difference between itself and the West End ’s neighbouring theatres, the UCL Bloomsbury has a less traditional programme, which includes experimental works and live music. In line with its university status, the UCL Bloomsbury shows two seasons of work by UCL students. It has also acquired a particular reputation for stand-up comedy and some of Britain ’s most well-known comics have appeared here, including Lily Savage, Eddie Izzard, Jo Brand, Jimmy Carr, Harry Hill and Ricky Gervais.
