Plug could be pulled on webspace scheme
WESTMINSTER Council is considering closing a scheme where residents were given their own Westminster MySpace-style internet webpage.
The Welcome to Westminster project gave residents a personalised web page called My Westminster. Users can check their transaction history for council tax, electoral roll and library cards.
Finance chiefs granted £423,000 in January to the project because they thought it would save time and money. But by weeks later the scheme has already run out of cash and now needs another £250,000.
The money is needed to foot unseen Data Protection costs and because the high-tech computer system failed at uploading residents’ details.
Private firm Vertex will pay £157,000 of the £250,000. The private company are responsible for the computer system which the Local Government Ombudsman last year found distributed hundreds of incorrect bailiffs summons to drivers in Westminster.
