Hundred respond to TV appeal over cyclist attack
MORE than 100 calls have been made to police after a television appeal to catch a scooter gang that left a young cyclist in a coma.
Jane Gauntlett, 25, fell from her bike when her bag was stolen last month in a high-speed chase in Harrow Road, Maida Vale.
She hit her head on the curb and was in intensive care in St Mary’s for two weeks.
The student is now in “a serious but stable condition”.
Officers said they would be following up the information prompted by the case appearing on the BBC’s Crimewatch programme.
The victim’s mother, Belinda Gauntlett, said her daughter had now started the “journey to recovery”.
She said: “Two moped riders snatched her black leather handbag from the back of her mountain bike, causing her to fall and hit her head.”
Detectives have linked the robbery to two other similar robberies later that day and have urged any other victims of the gang to come forward.
Belinda said receiving a call to say that her child was unconscious and critically ill was her “worst nightmare”. She said: “I would hate for anyone else to go through what we have been through. My daughter is strong and brave and has started the journey to recovery.
“She has received a huge amount of support from her friends and family. We all hope that she will be able to enjoy freedom and independence.”
Six men arrested in connection with the investigation have been bailed.
