Thousands turn out for
St Patrick’s
TENS of thousands turned out for London’s St Patrick’s Day parade and festival on Sunday.
Crowds lined the streets to watch the parade through central London and along Piccadilly for the celebrations in Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Covent Garden.
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London led the parade alongside John O’Donoghue, Irish Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism; Dáithí O’Ceallaigh, Irish Ambassador to London; Pat Doherty, Vice President of Sinn Féin; and Mary Allen, President of the Council of Irish Counties Associations in Britain.
The fountains in London’s historic Trafalgar Square were dyed green to mark the day.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said: “London’s St Patrick’s Day parade and festival celebrate what generations of London Irish have brought to this city. It was wonderful to see every one of London’s communities here for a great day out with the Irish. London now has one of the largest celebrations of Irish culture in the world. We are all hoping for a new chapter of peace and prosperity with the Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Fein coming together in a new power sharing Northern Ireland Executive.” |
