Revamp for the square
DRAMATIC plans to revamp the Leicester Square site of the famous Odeon cinema, on the rundown southern side of the major tourist attraction, are in the pipeline.
Top architect Ken Shuttleworth has been appointed to create the new scheme, which is expected to be for a leisure-led development with a new cinema in the basement and a new hotel above it.
Former Irish rugby player and team manager Pat Whelan has acquired the site through Budelli Construction, which he owns together with fellow Irishmen Pat Chessser and Paul Hanby, reports the Estates Gazette.
They bought the Odeon West End from a private equity company for £28 million just over a year ago.
Last October Whelan bought an adjoining property for £8 million, which will enable Radisson Edwardian, which operates the Pastoria Hotel, to be enlarged.
“Westminster is keen to see Leicester Square redeveloped,” reports the Estates Gazette. “London and Regional, which owns large parts of Leicester Square, is known to have held discussions with Westminster.” |
