Irony of hoarding removal
• YOU reported that the North Westminster community school is complaining that the £250,000 income from an advertising hoarding at the North Wharf Road site is now going to Westminster Council.
What wonderful, even exhilarating, irony. In 2005, my residents’ association objected to the monster hoarding and Westminster Council demanded changes from the school. The school and JC Decaux then appealed to the Planning Inspectorate.
Unfortunately, for no clear reason, the appeal was upheld.
The school accepted the hoarding, even though a walk across Harrow Road will demonstrate how it dominates the church at Paddington Green.
As an educational institution the school ignored its aesthetic (and social) mission. Now it has been outmanoeuvred by the council because the school is legally a business!
In August 2005 the council housing services wrote assuring me that “we will continue to press for… removal when the opportunity arises. That will be in August when the school/business moves.”
