hear ye, hear ye! the gla hires a crier
OYEZ! Oyez! The town crier of Westminster has been appointed to the role of town crier to the Mayor of London – for the first time in recorded history.
Peter Moore, who is already the town crier for 10 different boroughs, became the first ever town crier appointed to the London mayor and the Greater London Authority (GLA) in a ceremony at Marylebone Council House in Marylebone this week.
Lord Mayor of Westminster Alexander Nicoll, presenting the badge to Mr Moore, praised the GLA’s decision to give the City of London a “welcoming face”.
The role of the town crier as an event promoter and goodwill ambassador dates back to the middle ages, but it has never bee n used to represent the Mayor of London.
Mr Moore, who worked as an actor before he answered an ad for town crier 29 years ago, said he was “chuffed to bits” at the result.
He added: “Above all, I love what I do – I shall carry this badge with pride.”
