West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 20 April 2007
Fears bug may spread
• THANK you Patricia Quaill for highlighting MRSA (‘I stopped going out because I had MRSA’, April 13) .
Both my parents contracted this disease whilst in hospital more than six years ago.
But I still know so little about how the illness is contracted – apart from the fact that it favours a hospital-type environment where sick people have a low resistance to infection.
My own sheltered housing block with more than 240 tenants – mostly elderly and vulnerable – is now going to house patients from St John’s hospice day centre while it relocates to other premises for six months.
Whilst this, to me, is very unusual, other hospital bits and bobs may choose to move into spare space of residential property, thereby putting MRSA into a wider public domain.
Can we please know more about MRSA’s origins and how to recognise it? BARBARA STEVENS
