Asbos for illegal traders outside British Museum
ROGUE hot dog sellers who continue to trade outside the British Museum could be jailed for up to two years under new powers to be invoked by the Town Hall.
Camden Council hopes to employ never-before-used injunction powers to permanently remove the traders from Great Russell Street.
The news comes following Labour councillor Jonathon Simpson’s plea to environment chief Mike Green to use Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (Asbos) to put an end to the trade.
Cllr Simpson said the hot dog sellers had been pushed into Camden following a successful campaign from neighbouring Westminster Council, adding: “Prosecuting is one thing but having an Asbo may be a better route.”
He warned: “I’ve had complaints about the smell and it’s terribly poor hygiene. People are likely to end up being very ill.”
Councillor Green said hot dog sellers who breach an injunction could be jailed for up to two years, adding: “The injunction can be used to end a public nuisance or restrain breaches of the criminal law. This is considered more appropriate as the behaviour of the illegal hot dog sellers affects the comfort and convenience of a number of people within the neighbourhood.”
A British Museum spokesman said: “The British Museum is fully aware of and in agreement with the concerns surrounding this issue. We are working with our colleagues at Camden Council and local businesses which are affected to find a satisfactory resolution to this problem.” |
