Former Labour MP and cabinet minister Tony Benn addresses the crowd |
Benn speaks out during Trafalgar Square May Day gathering
SOCIALISTS, including the veteran politician Tony Benn, waved the red flag in the midday sun at the May Day protests in Trafalgar Square on Tuesday.
At the same time Westminster Unison joined thousands on national strike over pay and conditions.
Speaking from the historic podium was former Labour MP Tony Benn.
He called for troops to be withdrawn from Iraq, the creation of an independent Palestinian state, an end to privatisation and university fees and trade union rights to be entrenched in law.
He said: “I have been hearing speeches in Trafalgar Square for 50 years. I spoke here about the Suez War. I have heard speeches about Franco here. This is the place where the politics of the future begins. Where women, the Irish and the unions came to proclaim a better future.” |
