MP joins Soho Post Office campaign
MARK Field MP has criticised plans to move Soho’s main post office into
Oxford Street.
The Post Office last month announced plans to move Poland Street branch into the WH Smith’s flagship store in the Plaza.
It is part of a controversial sell-off of 70 Crown Post Office branches across the country.
The Tory MP for Cities and Westminster said he has had phone calls, letters and been contacted by the Post Office about the move that will happen by August 2008.
He said: “Soho remains a vibrant centre for residents and business. It needs a Post Office. The worry by moving it to Oxford Street, a shopping area, is it will be swamped by tourists.
Oxford Street is a shopping area, not for the local community. Soho is potentially losing a vital amenity.”
He added: “I remember a campaign that came up after they tried to close a Post Office on the Vauxhall Bridge Road in Pimlico three years ago. There was a campaign but in actual fact the man who ran the post office was getting quite a significant pay off.”
The Commercial Workers Union is balloting for industrial action over the cuts claiming valuable and skilled staff will be lost to inexperienced retailers.
A spokesman said: “W H Smith has no history of providing the sort of service the Post Office provides.”
