Campaigners in counter move to save post office
KAREN Buck MP, Labour councillors and traders are campaigning to save the post office in Harrow Road.
It is on a list of 15 post offices across the country facing the axe if it does not find a commercial partner.
Princes Chemist in the Harrow Road has organised a petition against closure, with dozens of signatures.
The Labour MP for Regent’s Park and
Kensington North raised the closure in Parliament. She told MP Alistair Darling MP: “This is not only an area of extreme urban deprivation, but a struggling urban high street that the local urban regeneration agencies have been working to try to turn round. What factors will determine whether areas of high urban deprivation face losing any of their service?”
Mr Darling replied: “In this case, the post office is having difficulty finding somebody to go into a joint venture. It is often the case that when a post office has difficulties, the surrounding shops have difficulties too. That is something that the Post Office, the council and other agencies need to look into.”
Queen’s Park Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said: “. It is vital that the City Council and all the regeneration agencies active in the area all get together to save the post office.” |
