‘MAMA AFRICA’ WOWS FESTIVAL IN THE RAIN

LEGENDARY singer Miriam Makeba entertained thousands of fans who braved the Bank Holiday rain for the first annual Africa Day celebration in Trafalgar Square.
The woman known world-wide as ‘Mama Africa’, a leading opponent of apartheid, joined a strong line-up of performers including Misty N Roots, Dele Sosimi and the African Jazz All-Stars, for her first UK performance in five years.
Visitors were also treated to a marketplace featuring a range of arts and crafts and a food court including popular African dishes like jollof rice and fried plantain.
The free event was organised by the Mayor of London to highlight the contribution of London’s African communities to the capital.
It is part of a programme of events marking the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain.
