Jail for academic fraudster
AN Oxford academic who claimed £3,5000 illegally in housing benefits from Westminster City Council has been jailed for two months.
Dr Anita Warneford, a specialist in child psychology, admitted to Cambridge Magistrates’ Court, that she had failed to declare a £400,000 property, despite claiming benefits from addresses in both Cambridge and Westminster on four different occasions.
She received £6,800 illegally from Cambridge City Council as well as the £35,000 from Westminster. The case was brought to attention after a joint investigation by both councils.
Colin Barrow, Westminster City Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for finance, said: “Warneford obviously thought she was too clever to get caught
but the co-operation between Westminster and Cambridge Councils outwitted her.” |
