Why are people rubbish at recycling?
• I HAVE for many years been a key advocate of recycling. Not only have I placed my own waste paper, tins and bottles in the appropriate bins, but have also, when out walking, collected such items left lying about by other pedestrians.
Now, however, I am informed at least 20 per cent is unfit because it has been contaminated.
Only last week, in the paper and card bin at the corner of Sutherland Avenue and Maida Vale, I found two plastic carrier bags filled with potato peelings, used Kleenex, cigarette ends etc.
I immediately removed them and placed them in a nearby refuse bin.
I have frequently seen plastic bottles, cans, worn out batteries and garments deposited in the paper only bins.
Since, as the saying goes, one rotten apple ruins the whole barrel, I assume the entire contents of such bins is therefore a total loss.
I shall for the present at least continue to recycle appropriate waste materials, but if nothing is done to deter these vandals who, through either ignorance or malice or forethought, thwart my efforts, I shall simply chuck all my rubbish in the dustbin.
Much hot air is expended by politicians on the need to fight global warming and thereby save the planet.
Sensible recycling is one way I which everyone can make a contribution to this. Is it not worth a try?

• THIS morning, six pieces of junk mail were delivered together, by Royal Mail (so the ‘postmark’ on one envelope stated). No real mail came, so it might well be that this was a very ‘special delivery’.
I expect many other homes in the area received the same envelopes and flyers and, presumably, most people did the same as me - put the lot in the recycling bag with hardly a second look.
I did notice one of the flyers was from a pizza firm and would have been disappointed otherwise! In my life, I think I have had more flyers delivered than pizzas eaten...
Over 20 billion pieces of junk mail are delivered to our homes each year.
I have written to Royal Mail to let them know I do not want this junk mail – and I recommend your readers to do likewise.
