Dr Kian Tajbakhsh - arrested and charged with espionage. Teachers and students at University College are petitioning for his release |
Uni fears for ex-student
MORE than 2,500 students and teachers at University College London have signed a petition calling for the release of a former student facing execution in Iran.
Dr Kian Tajbakhsh was arrested on May 11 and charged with espionage.
Iran security services believe he was part of a network of scholars planning a “velvet revolution”.
If convicted he faces execution.
Dr Tajbakhsh is currently confined to Evin prison in Tehran. He has had no legal representation. The university said it was concerned that Dr Tajbakhsh could be forced to sign a confession.
Professor Malcolm Grant, President and Provost of UCL, said: “Dr Tajbakhsh is an internationally respected social scientist and urban planner. “We urge the Iranian government to engage in formal legal process by granting him legal representation.” |
