Embassy killing suspect quizzed
SCOTLAND Yard detectives have interviewed the prime suspect in the Yvonne Fletcher investigation 23 years after the policewoman was shot dead.
Libyan authorities allowed police to take statements from the man as part of the investigation into the killing of the 25-year-old officer outside the Libyan embassy in St James’s Square.
PC Fletcher was struck down by bullets fired by a sniper on April 17 1984, during a demonstration by Libyan dissidents. The killing resulted in an 11-day siege of the embassy that ended with the suspected gunman being smuggled out of the building under diplomatic immunity.
Detectives have for two decades been blocked from probing chief suspects by President Muammar Gadaffi’s regime.
But the Libyan leader is now offering his
personal support.
The sudden change preceded the announcement that the conviction of the Lockerbie bomber is to be referred back to the High Court as an alleged miscarriage of justice.
The dramatic decision has led to a second appeal being granted for Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al–Megrahi. He was sentenced to life imprisonment after his conviction for the murder of 270 people when PanAm Flight 103 exploded above the Scottish town in 1988.
Libya agreed to pay compensation to families affected by the Lockerbie bombing. |
