Terror threat looms on Tour
THE foiled bomb attacks in the Haymarket and Marble Arch have led to a review of security over this weekend’s Grande Depart of the Tour de France.
The Metropolitan Police are expecting more than one million people to turn out to watch the Tour and 4,500 officers will be on duty.
The race begins on Saturday in Trafalgar Square and continues throughout the weekend.
A Met spokeswoman said: “We have thoroughly reviewed the policing plans for the Tour de France to ensure that they are fit for purpose.”
She said they anticipated more than 500,000 people turning out to watch Saturday’s Prologue, the speed trial before the race and “possibly more” for the first stage of the race on Sunday.
The Met has confirmed that the review was in response to the recent attacks in London. “There will be over and above the normal levels of police so we are confident we can cope,” the spokeswoman added.
Traffic will be banned from central London during the event and police said a detailed plan has been drawn up to deal with overcrowding.
Mass road closures are planned.
