Hockey café art goes to auction
MUSHROOM-MAD Antonio Carluccio is to auction artwork that adorned the walls of his flagship restaurant in Covent Garden.
The works, including a menu designed by David Hockney, a huge mushroom by Sidney Nolan and a painting by Carluccio himself, go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in New Bond Street on July 13.
The sale, at the summer 20th Century British Art auction, will be used to furnish a new 172-seater restaurant and headquarters in King Street, Covent Garden.
Carluccio plans to open a 172-table restaurant, delicatessen and headquarters in an empty three-floor grade-II listed office block in King Street.
And he said he would use the sale of the paintings to spruce up the headquarters.
He said: “I can’t hang the works on at home and would have had to let them rot, so I thought I had better sell and put the money into my new restaurant.”
Hockney’s design for the Carluccio’s menu is up for sale for £20,000.
It shows his favourite meal featuring Beluga caviar, watercress soup and crème brulee. |
